Not Your Average Oklahoma Lake
Ask anyone who grew up in southern Oklahoma and they'll tell you: Lake Murray is different. Where a lot of lakes in this part of the country run muddy red, Lake Murray is known for its clear, blue-green water — the kind that makes you do a double take the first time you see it from the road. Swimming, skiing, fishing, and just floating are all better when you can actually see the water you're in.
It's also the centerpiece of Lake Murray State Park, the largest state park in Oklahoma. The lake and park were built in the 1930s by the Works Progress Administration and the Civilian Conservation Corps, and that craftsmanship is still everywhere — hand-laid stone, rustic bridges, and structures that look like they grew out of the hillside.
Tucker Tower: The Lake's Landmark

If Lake Murray has a signature, it's Tucker Tower. Perched on a rocky point above the water, this 65-foot stone tower looks more like a piece of a European castle than something you'd expect in Chickasaw Country. It was built by the WPA and, as local lore has it, was originally meant as a summer retreat for Governor William "Alfalfa Bill" Murray — the lake's namesake. That plan never came to be.
Instead, the tower became a geological museum, once home to the famous Lake Murray Meteorite, and today it's part of the Nature Center at Tucker Tower. Inside you'll find exhibits on the lake's history, geology, and wildlife. Then comes the best part: climb the winding stairs to the top for a 360-degree view across the lake. Keep your eyes up — bald eagles are regularly spotted soaring over the water.
More Than a Day at the Beach
Beyond the tower, Lake Murray gives you plenty of reasons to stay more than a weekend:
- Boating and fishing — thousands of acres of open water, coves to explore, and good fishing year-round.
- Trails — roughly 30 miles of hiking and biking trails wind through the park.
- Golf, horseback riding, and swimming beaches — something for every speed of vacation.
- Sunrises and sunsets — the light on the water here is worth setting an alarm for.
One heads-up: Lake Murray State Park participates in Oklahoma's state park parking pass program, so plan on a daily vehicle pass when you visit the park itself. Current rates are posted on TravelOK.com.
